Sunset December 2018 Newsletter

From the Desk of Dr. McDaniel

Happy December!

We have just a few weeks before Winter Break and we have so much to do here at Sunset! Your students have been working so hard and we appreciate your continued work with them at home by completing the Homework Menus, reading at home and practicing essential skills!

The key to learning at school is being present! We are seeing a huge spike in student absences that is very concerning. Please make sure your child (children) are at school EVERY DAY! We can’t teach them if they are not here! School starts at 8:20 and we have a very important routine that begins first thing in the morning! It is so important for your child to be a part of that in their classrooms. It is equally as important for them to NOT be picked up early. We are working right up until the end of the day! We need every minute. Thank you for helping with this and getting our attendance rate back up!

Have a wonderful Winter Break and remember to READ, READ and READ some more!!

Ask your child if they’ve earned a CHAMP slip and HOW!! Also, ask them if they have been called for a CHAMP prize on Friday!

PE & HEALTH – Scooter Unit & Fire Safety

This month in PE we will begin our Scooter Unit. Students will learn to properly ride scooters along with skills in cooperation, lower and upper body coordination, and patterns of movement. The muscle of the month this month is the trapezius, and the words of the month are cooperate, relay, pattern, scramble, and grinch.

In health we will be learning about Fire Safety. Students will engage in interactive stations that teach them about how to be prepared in a fire and prevent fires. Words of the month include fire extinguisher, fire hydrant, smoke detector, 911, matches, and lighter.

Music Concert #2!

Each month Sunset features one of our grades’ work in music. Thank you to all who came to hear our 4th graders play xylophones with our honor choir in November. On Thursday, Dec 20th, at 9:30 am and 6:00 pm our 3rd grade will present their skills with recorders, joined by the choir and our new Ukulele group!

Library Adventures

Merry December to you all! I hope that this holiday season finds you all cozying up with a good book. We have quite a few new books in the Sunset Library for all ages. Encourage your child to locate the “New Book Cart” and select a new book! Students in grades 2nd-5th have 3 weeks left to participate in the 2nd Quarter Reading Challenge. They need to have completed 1 BINGO (5 book summaries) to qualify for the party and get their name on the Brag Wall.

Let’s keep our kids reading!

FRESHTASTIX CAFE!

Welcome to December! The Freshtastix Cafe would like to give thanks to all those who have visited us this year and who have joined us during our breakfast and lunch services! There are so many blessings that we get to be a part of everyday with students, faculty, and guests! We have had a GREAT year so far! Keep in mind over the holidays, that healthy eating can help everyone achieve and maintain a healthy body weight, and provide our bodies with important nutrients that can reduce the risk of developing health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, iron deficiency, and dental issues. Be health smart! Please stop in to see our festive decorations. We may have some surprising “visitors” during the last week of school before Christmas break!!
